It is extremely important to AJ Bell that key database systems offer the highest reliability and performance possible.

The DBA works closely with other teams within Technology Services – and with other teams within AJ Bell – to provide support, maintenance, and updates as a result of Service Desk calls.

What does the job involve?

  • Ensuring seamless database operations across various environments.
  • Rigorous performance testing and SQL script approval to maintain our high standards.
  • Keeping database availability and performance within top-tier SLAs.
  • Proactively monitoring and optimising server performance.
  • Resolving complex database challenges independently and implementing upgrades.
  • Maintaining rigorous database access control and ensuring robust backup operations.
  • Engaging in strategic capacity and architecture planning.
  • Addressing Service Desk issues with effective data solutions.
  • Advising on appropriate database technologies for future projects.
  • Conducting disaster recovery tests to ensure our resilience.
  • Out of hours support via a DBA team rota.

Competence, knowledge, and skills:

  • Strong analytical ability to dissect complex processes.
  • Proficiency in relational and non-relational databases.
  • Strong communication and the capacity to see beyond the immediate scope.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively in fast-paced settings.
  • Self-motivation with a detail-oriented approach and a collaborative spirit.

Experience:

  • 5 years+ experience Microsoft SQL Server.
  • SQL Server Clustering, Replication and High Availability.
  • Proven track record in SQL Server database performance tuning.
  • Experience in upgrading and migrating legacy systems.
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases like MongoDB.
